streetstyle t-shirt of the week: one small step

astronaut man and child in spaceIn honor of the passing of one of our greatest explorers, Neil Armstrong, this week’s t-shirt of the week is titled, “one small step.” As a former test pilot and NASA astronaut, he was the first human to walk on the moon.  It was back in 1969, during the Camelot era of President Kennedy, when this incredible accomplishment was achieved.

Upon setting foot on the moon, Astronaut Neil Armstrong stated, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind…” making this one of most famous lines to have ever been recited.

In acknowledging his passing today at the age of 82, NASA put out this statement,  “As we enter this next era of space exploration, we do so standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong. We mourn the passing of a friend, fellow astronaut and true American hero.”

I selected this t-shirt in the photo above because I think it exemplifies how the world in 1969 anticipated how we might be living in 2012. Great television shows of that era such as “The Jetsons” and “Lost in Space,” led us to believe that we could be living on the moon by the early 21st century…and if not the moon, at least in space. Alas, we are all still here on Planet Earth. Doing what we humans have done for thousands of years before, but, space travel, thanks to entrepreneurs like Sir Richard Branson, is closer to a reality than it has ever been…and tickets for the first space journeys have been purchased, so all is not lost.

With his stark, reflective aviator sunglasses, spiked hair, the look by this wearer above is that of a 21st century space explorer with just a slight pinch of hipster on a warm, summer day. The etching and lithographic quality of the airy, monochromatic imagery of man and child in space are well-suited for the midnight blue hue of the t-shirt making this design truly pop.  Here’s hoping mankind continues to leap forward.
