During June, the day and week of Summer Solstice is always an active time in New York City. Not only does it mark the beginning of the summer season, but, one joyous annual event known as the Mermaid Parade takes place. The mermaids and mermen came from near and far decked out in all kinds of sea regalia to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this Coney Island tradition.
And, this year the costumes were as creative and imaginative and as they were colorful. Sailors, monsters nymphs and endless underwater creatures could be seen serenading and sashaying down the streets of Coney Island. The lovely tee shown above is from Lola Star and was created in honor of the Mermaid Parade.
It is estimated that 500,000 people were on hand to enjoy this event which has been said to resemble New Orlean’s Mardi Gras. As the parade drew to an end, the Coney Island Dancers, a small DJ business that plays disco music, house music, funk, and soul on the boardwalk during the summer for free every Thursdays, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, geared up. A huge dance party broke out on the boardwalk. Many classics and re-pumped newbie sounds put us in the groove as we danced til the sun set over the horizon of the Atlantic shore. If this is what Summer 2012 has in store, bring it on! Fun events like this one are what summer is all about. Happy Summer 2012, everyone!
