streetstyle t-shirt of the week: defend new orleans

marching to a different beat

I recently wandered into an art opening at a gallery in Brooklyn which had a beautiful back garden.  It was the perfect setting for a summer exhibition in July.  As the sun began to set, the mellow vibe of summertime cool we were collectively grooving to was suddenly interrupted by the sound of boisterous, live music.  All at once, the crowd was forced to move to one side of the garden as we realized we were being infiltrated by a small marching band with a big Dixie sound. So unexpected and so perfect at the same time.

As they serenaded us with a few classic tunes, I found my eyes being drawn to the drummer and the cool t-shirt he had on.  It’s graphic had a spiked skeleton head with a rifle below it and the words, “DEFEND NEW ORLEANS” in bold text and dueling fonts. Kinda punk, kinda bayou all at once. I kinda liked it.

It seemed fitting to me that it was being worn by the drummer as well. This visual seemed to create the perfect metaphor.  Here before me was the little drummer boy valiantly drumming his beat and saying to us all, “Defend New Orleans by any means necessary…we will always survive, we will always stand proud!”

And now, with much deeper appreciation, I moved a little to the beat and thought of the unofficial motto of the City of New Orleans, “Laissez les bons temps rouler” (let the good times roll)!
