streetstyle t-shirt of the week: dirty rhythm

The dirty rhythm moves her..

This past Saturday, June 25th, 2011, marked the second anniversary of the passing of Michael Jackson. Radio and music video programming across the board honored the King of Pop with respectable amounts of all day airplay.  The day’s journey took me all over the city and the one thing that stood out the most was the number of New Yorkers who were quietly honoring him by donning Michael Jackson inspired digs.

There were tons of the usual suspects. The Thriller and Beat it! periods reigned supreme. The white glove era which was probably more of a way of life than a passing trend was a close second. But the Michael Jackson inspired wearables that truly caught me by surprise were the songs themselves.  They are gradually taking on a life of their own.  I enjoyed seeing these the most because there is so much open to interpretation. It was as if I was a member of a special club because I know the songs so well. And, I guess in some small way, I am.

For example, take the t-shirt shown above. Quick! Five seconds. What song do these lyrics belong to? Okay, I’ll make it easy on you and allow you to hum a few bars, if need be. Ring-a-ling-a-ling!  Your time is up!  It’s “Blame it on the Boogie” by the then Jackson Five. It was one of the big hits off of their “Destiny” album.  This album was released in 1978 and marked the first time in their career where they had total artistic control and was also the first album the Jackson brothers produced. Monumental? Big time.

From the look on the woman’s face above, the dirty rhythm and the devil still have a hold on her…even after all these years. Good thing she knows what to blame it on.
