Yesterday was February 11, 2011 (eleven-eleven??? okay.). But, for the city that never sleeps, it was the second day of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center, the closing day of Social Media Week and if that wasn’t enough, Valentine’s Day is just a heartbeat away. Although we are coping with frigid weather, New York City’s social calendar is blazing with activity.
I sashayed over to Lincoln Center to get a glimpse into the fashion world and its aficionados as they moved and shook. I quickly discovered that the real runway show begins well before one is ushered in and sat before a runway. The real runway show begins the second a black limo arrives in front of the Lincoln Center Complex. On the real runway, the limo door opens and one stylish foot (usually a stiletto) hits the pavement. As the limo door widens (this of course, is now being held by the driver who so feverishly ran over to accommodate said fashionista), the second foot preps as a pose is struck and a couture figurine appears before us. Cue the angel voices and a ray of light.
Dressed to the nines, this fashionista always wears stylish black sunglasses that devour her whole face. They act as a shield and ricochet the bright flashes from the many press cameras that now collectively give off enough light to brighten the whole upper west side of Manhattan. Said fashionista leads with her nose as she saunters through the crowd of photographers. They trail behind her continuously snapping photos as she heads across the plaza to the fashion tent’s entrance. The tent door opens and she magically disappears behind it. In less than five minutes, this whole process has come to an end. But, it is destined to begin when yet another black limo appears on the scene. The photographers scurry over in stepford fashion with anticipation.
Once inside and coat checked, I am amazed at the many ways the color black is interpreted and re-birthed. Where would we be without our wardrobe of black that makes us in vogue and a style icon in split seconds?
I spotted this young “fashionette” perusing the scene. Her fresh-faced sense of fashion is in category of its own. A poppy girl indeed.
