57th and Fifth Avenue
New York, NY
October 5th, 2010
Sometimes you are about to go in one direction, and fate comes along and sways you down a completely different path. That was the case the other night as I took a stroll down Fifth Avenue just little south of Central Park. I wandered past Bergdorf Goodman and was mesmerized by this magnificent display in of one of their Fifth Avenue windows. Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury goods department store and the sister company to Neiman Marcus, has been at its Fifth Avenue address since 1928. It is known throughout the world for its elegance, quality and superior service.
Perhaps it was that perfect moment in time where the worlds of color, light and composition move in orbit. It was beautiful to experience and I was just the vessel there to capture it. “The Cactus,” as it is titled by its amazing creator, Andy Harman, is handmade with electric blue lamb leather and mounted onto ¾ inch marble. It is one in an edition of ten and stands 7 feet tall. He considers himself a set designer-artist-macrame-leather sculpture-mondo. I call him a modern renaissance man. His works will be on display in the windows of Bergdorf Goodman until October 22nd.
